Utility MarketPower systems protection is our forte. We have a core group dedicated to power systems studies and the development of protective relay settings. In the last ten years alone, we have developed relay settings for literally thousands of relays, most of which are modern multifunction, microprocessor relays. We have a strong design group specializing in protective relay design projects. Our strength is relay system upgrades requiring modification of relay one lines as well as development of new AC and DC schematics, relay panel layout design, relay panel internal design and field interconnection design. To support our design effort, our staff has expertise in the area of installation, testing, checkout and commissioning.

Our engineering services also include design of distribution and transmission stations. We design, configure and install SCADA systems. Our experience includes all voltage levels through 500kV.

Past Projects

Here are just a few sample projects that demonstrate our expertise in the Utility field.

  • We have provided services for utility transmission relay upgrades and additions. Relay design included modifying existing relay one line diagrams, complete development of AC and DC schematics, relay panel layout, relay panel internal wiring design and field equipment interconnection design. Relay settings included providing required calculations and relay settings files for uploading. Checkout and commissioning included relay bench testing, field device and wiring checkout, DC function checks, end to end line protection scheme testing and load checks. Several of these projects are listed here.
  • Provided relay design, relay settings, checkout and commissioning for the addition of a 567MVA three phase 500/230kV auto transformer and the two new 500kV breakers and two new 230kV breakers.  Primary and backup transformer protective relay panels the associated breaker control and new bus differential panels were included in the scope.
  • Provided relay design, checkout and commissioning for a 230/69kV Substation upgrade – Included two new 300MVA 230/69 kV transformers, nine breaker replacements, two new breakers, two new transformer relay panels, new bus differential relay panel, two new breaker control relay panels and four transmission line protective relaying replacements.
  • Provided relay design, relay settings, checkout and commissioning for a 500/115kV Substation – Included new 500MVA 500/115kV transformer, three new breakers, three new transformer relay panels, new bus differential relay panel, two new breaker control relay panels, new primary and backup 125VDC substation battery systems and new tertiary winding ground detection scheme.
  • Provided relay design and relay settings for 500/230/69kV Substation – Included new 200MVA 230/69 kV transformer, three breaker replacements, four transmission line protective relaying replacements and new SCADA control installation.
    Provided relay design, relay settings, checkout and commissioning for a 500kV Substation - Two 500kV transmission line primary and backup protective relay replacements, including end to end relay to relay power line carrier and microwave communications.
  • Provided relay design, relay settings, checkout and commissioning for a 230kV Substation serving a large petrochemical facility - Two 230kV transmission line primary and backup protective relay additions, including end to end relay to relay fiber optic communications.
  • We performed an upgrade to a large utility company’s RTU’s in Louisiana and Arkansas for both transmission and distribution. This included replacement of old Landis & Gyr, L&N Conitel and Basic RTU’s with modern micro processor based G.E. Harris RTU’s. We provided installation, configuration, check out and commissioning.
